A message from Roger

The UCU general secretary ballot result has now been declared and Sally Hunt has been elected. The union and our members face major and difficult challenges from employers and government in almost every aspect of our working lives. The turnout was just 13.9 per cent which in itself suggests the scale of the challenge the union faces. I wish Sally Hunt very well in meeting those challenges. To meet them successfully will require a clear strategic vision and a determined articulate response which members can have confidence in and ownership of. I will seek to play my part in ensuring that is the case through my continuing role as Head of Equality and Employment Rights Finally I would like to sincerely thank the hundreds of members who sent messages of support and campaigned during the election.

Sunday 18th February

Thanks to healthcare academics for their support!

The following letter is being circulated. Please feel free to pass onto to all UCU members working in health care departments in whatever professional capacity.

“Dear colleague
We are health care academics and UCU members. Like other UCU members we will be voting in the election for General Secretary of UCU.
We have considered the manifestos of the candidates and examined their track record.
We have decided to vote for Roger Kline and we ask you to consider doing the same for these five reasons:
1. Roger is the only candidate with an extensive knowledge of the NHS and of health care professional issues - gained as Head of Industrial Relations for the Health Visitors Association and as Head of Health for MSF (now Amicus). Roger has published widely and spoken extensively on health care issues, including professional accountability. He was for ten years a member of the Nursing and Midwifery Staffs Negotiating Committee.
2. He is the candidate with the widest range of experience including winning the landmark equal pay settlement for speech and language therapists, challenging discrimination on gender, race, disability and sexual orientation and campaigning for good health services.
3. Roger is the only candidate combining substantial knowledge of health with deep understanding of higher education.
4. He has a well known reputation for working collegially and democratically and respecting members’ views.
5. We want health educators to have a higher profile in UCU with support nationally and locally. Radical change in the NHS is adversely affecting health educators. We know Roger is personally committed to substantially improving UCU’s support for health educators in all disciplines.
We urge you to use your vote. Please forward this to colleagues if you share our views.
We are writing in our personal capacities.
