A message from Roger

The UCU general secretary ballot result has now been declared and Sally Hunt has been elected. The union and our members face major and difficult challenges from employers and government in almost every aspect of our working lives. The turnout was just 13.9 per cent which in itself suggests the scale of the challenge the union faces. I wish Sally Hunt very well in meeting those challenges. To meet them successfully will require a clear strategic vision and a determined articulate response which members can have confidence in and ownership of. I will seek to play my part in ensuring that is the case through my continuing role as Head of Equality and Employment Rights Finally I would like to sincerely thank the hundreds of members who sent messages of support and campaigned during the election.

What a load of ballots

“My ballot papers have arrived. They are a nightmare. Aren’t you worried the sheer size and complexity will deter members from voting at all?”

Theresa, Coventry

I am. I was not involved in the discussion about the process of balloting. It think it is a real mistake not to separate out the General secretary election. It is the election that will decisively affect how the union operates over the nexst five years and it would be a real pity if the size of the pack, and the fact that the manifestos are stuck in the middle means members are deterred from voting.

Whoever is elected should have a clear mandate and this pack doesn’t help that process.

Because I’m concerned members simply won’t read the manifestos I’ve summarised some of the key points in mine in an email being sent to 79,000 UCU members on Tuesday. You can read the email here

Please forward this to all members you are in contact with.

Thanks
